About Laura Smith-Johnson

I was raised in a military household and benefited from the diversity of people’s ethnic backgrounds and the high standards to which the military aspired. With two brothers, one my twin, I competed with boys growing up which, being raised in the 60s and 70s, gave me the determination to achieve my potential.

I found my passion in accounting in high school and then computer integration in college. The two complimented each other nicely as I entered the workforce when companies were transitioning from manual to computerized accounting.

I became a mom shortly after graduating from college and worked in my field to support my little family. However, I had to balance childcare and motherhood with work and sometimes working from home was necessary.

When I wasn’t looking for love, it found me. He was a computer system designer, and we made a great team in business. As he put it, he was a country boy. Although living in the city for many years, where he found me, the country was where he needed to be. I was a city girl, never living in the country. With the popularity of the Internet booming and working from home feasible, I felt I could step into country life. My husband and I live near the foothills of Mt Spokane.

Shortly after moving to the country, the local fire chief introduced me to the volunteer fire department. Little did this city girl know that brave neighbors in the community, people just like you and me, are firefighters. Therefore, not being able to sit idly by and remembering my childhood with my brothers, I joined too.

Life has come full circle. My aging mother, who once held my hand to keep me steady, now needs me to hold hers. As my mother enters this phase in her life, my daughters, their families, my husband, and I provide compassion, safety, and a peaceful place for her to age gracefully.
